One of Washington’s pioneering growers, Dick Boushey planted his first wine grapes in 1980, three years before the Yakima Valley was recognized as an American Viticultural Area. He was also an early ambassador for Washington Sangiovese (planted in 1993) and Syrah (1997).Located on the outskirts of Grandview, Boushey Vineyard is cooler than other areas of the Columbia Valley. Rising to an elevation of 1,400 feet, soils here consist of silt loam, windblown loess and deposits from the Missoula floods on top of fractured basalt. The mild temperatures and layered soils allow the grapes to reach full physiological maturity, thanks to extended hang time. As a result, the wines are well balanced (lower alcohol, good acidity) and offer pure fruit expression. Boushey Vineyard Sangiovese is bright and vibrant. The Syrah from here has a lively elegance and sophistication.
