A Tribute to Michel Rolland: A Lasting Influence on Long Shadows and the World of Wine

With today’s news of the passing of Michel Rolland, the wine world has lost one of its most influential voices.

For more than five decades, Michel helped shape the global language of wine. From his roots in Pomerol to his work across Europe, the Americas, South Africa, and beyond, his reach was unparalleled. As one of the original “flying winemakers,” he advised more than 150 estates across multiple continents, bringing both technical insight and an unmistakable stylistic vision to each project.

But beyond scale, Michel’s true gift was far more nuanced.

He had an extraordinary ability to understand a wine — not just analytically, but intuitively. He believed that great wine was not imposed, but revealed. His work was grounded in observation, in patience, and in a deep respect for what each vineyard and each vintage had to say. Even amid criticism during his career, he remained steadfast in his philosophy, once remarking that having critics meant he was truly making an impact.

Michel Rolland and Long Shadows

As an early partner at Long Shadows, Michel collaborated closely with founding winemaker Gilles Nicault on Pedestal Merlot. Together, they created a wine that reflects both Washington State’s potential and Michel’s enduring philosophy: to adapt not to place, but to the fruit itself.

His influence helped shape Pedestal into a wine of elegance, depth, and unmistakable identity: one that continues to stand among the great expressions of Washington Merlot.

“In Washington I am dedicated to Merlot. As always and ever, the philosophy is not to adapt to one place, but to the grapes Mother Nature gives us, year after year.” — Michel Rolland

A Mentor and a Philosophy

To those who worked alongside him, Michel was more than a consultant, he was a teacher.

Long Shadows Director of Winemaking & Viticulture Gilles Nicault reflects:

“Michel taught me to listen before acting — to trust what the vineyard is telling you. His sensitivity to fruit, his precision, and his relentless pursuit of balance have left a permanent mark on how I approach every wine. Working alongside him was both humbling and inspiring.”

Michel’s legacy is not just found in the wines he touched, but in the generations of winemakers he influenced. His approach, blending intuition with experience, global perspective with local respect, helped redefine what modern winemaking could be.

A Global Legacy

Michel Rolland’s career coincided with a transformative era in wine. He helped elevate regions, refine techniques, and bring international attention to wines that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. His work in Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Argentina, and beyond contributed to the rise of some of the world’s most sought-after wines and shaped stylistic trends for decades.

At the same time, he never lost sight of the fundamentals: the vineyard, the people, and the vintage.

He was, above all, an observer.

Carrying Forward His Influence

At Long Shadows, we are honored to have shared in Michel’s journey. His imprint on Pedestal Merlot, and on our philosophy of winemaking, remains indelible.

His legacy lives on in every vintage, in every decision guided by the vineyard, and in every glass that reflects the balance and integrity he so deeply valued.

We raise a glass in gratitude.
